21st Birthday Celebrations

On The 1st April the Neuromuscular Centre celebrated its 21st Birthday.

61dd185584ba9c2e60e76ef38242cd92.jpgThe NMC was founded by SarahKelly and Kate Fox who both worked at Hebden Green School with pupils with muscular dystrophy. They identified that there was limited provision for young people once they left school.  In addition to the lack of further education and employment opportunities Sarah and Kate were motivated by the fact that the physiotherapy and support ceased once the young person reached adulthood.  Something had to be done.

Six months of continual fundraising saw the start of a very small initiative treating only a handful of people, between then and now the centre has grown exponentially. In the last year NMC’s Physiotherapists have provided 8,508 physiotherapy treatments. NMC Design+Print the NMC’s social enterprise provides employment for more than 20 individuals with md and currently has 30+ students studying on one of the various vocational training courses.

To celebrate the centres great success and officially open the new carer’s suite and kitchen funded by Cheshire West and Cheshire council and Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT we invited some people who were instrumental in the NMC’s very beginning. NMC President Matthew Kelly was joined by Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans, The Bishop of Chester, Rt Revd Dr Peter Forster and the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Chester Cllr Neil and Kathie Ritchie.

The Lord Mayor and head of our Community Action Group Debbie Leather, cut the ribbon declaring the carer’s suit and kitchen open. It was a great photo opportunity and gave us reason to indulge in a few heart felt speeches from Matthew Kelly our President and Kate fox with Sarah Kelly also told as of how surprised and proud they are that they started what is now a very successful and self sustaining centre that is able to help so many people.

We spent a wonderful afternoon reminiscing, catching up with old friends and eating cake. Thank you to everyone who sent their best wishes and birthday cards, we are really touched by the continued support we have received over the life of the centre so far and we are encouraged as we look forward to the next 21 years.
