Passive stretches

Muscles need to be stretched regularly to stop them becoming tight and short. For example, if the "Hamstrings" on the back of the thighs become tight it is very difficult to straighten the knees.

Our physiotherapists help with these stretches by supporting limbs and gently stretching the muscles of the legs and arms. The stretches should not be painful and they make the muscles feel looser and more comfortable.

People are encouraged to perform stretches every day at home to prevent muscle shortening and contractures. These may be modified to make it easier to repeat them correctly, or a carer can be taught how to do them safely.
